- New Plymouth Boys’ High School is a large state secondary school offering an increasing range of responsive educational opportunities and programmes for Year 9 to 13 students. A significant group of students participate in the many school leadership opportunities, with several high achieving groups and individuals involved in international events and programmes.
- A culture of sharing and celebrating success and achievement permeates the school, with students enjoying the recognition they receive across a wide spectrum of activities and endeavours. All boys are expected and supported to strive for improvement and success.
- Student achievement is above both the national mean and comparable decile 7 schools mean at all levels of National Certificates in Educational Achievement (NCEA). Level 1 NCEA literacy rates are above national means and are continuing to improve. Many students also achieve success in a wide range of cultural, sporting and academic competitions at regional and national levels.
- This report identifies the need for ongoing development in the use of assessment information. Such development should improve teachers reporting of how well students in Years 9 and 10 progress and achieve in all areas of learning.
- This report evaluates how well recent programme initiatives and teaching strategies are improving student achievement across the school. Topics evaluated in all schools are progress in the achievement of Māori students and Pacific students, and provision for gifted and talented education, international students and those accommodated in the school hostel. Meeting legislative requirements and aspects of student health and safety are reviewed, including pandemic planning.
- The headmaster, with the support from the board, leads several initiatives to improve students’ achievement in literacy, numeracy and learning across the curriculum at all levels. This leadership and commitment to cater for boys of all levels and abilities is mirrored by the enthusiasm of staff to continuously improve their ongoing practice.
- Teachers and students use many tools that help improve reading and writing achievements. These strategies are continuously extended and supported across the school. A learning support centre provides targeted literacy and numeracy support for over 70 students from across the school. Most of these students show a marked improvement in their achievement in end of year literacy testing. High levels of student engagement in most classes promote learning and achievement.
- The school ethos and climate reflect the board and staff commitment to a safe and well‑organised environment. Pastoral care systems and networks provide a strong guidance and support structure.
- The board, consisting of many new trustees with valued expertise, works closely with the headmaster and senior managers in a collaborative model of school governance.
- A recently built administration and classroom block provides well‑designed, purpose-built facilities for specialist student learning and guidance, and school administration and teaching staff.
- The well‑established hostel is effectively managed and caters well for 200 students at the heart of the school site.
- The school has a positive, purposeful tone where boys show respect for other people and strong peer support is evident.
