There are nine modern laboratories fitted with data projectors and sound systems and connected to the internet and school network. They are equipped with a wide range of experimental equipment and software.

General Science is compulsory for all students in Years 9 to 11 and courses are tailored to meet the needs of students. As well as specialist subject choices of Chemistry, Physics and Biology, a General Science course is an option for Year 12 and Year 13 students.

The department has students entering a diversity of competitions including ICAS Science, Taranaki Science Fair, and the Steam Car Challenge,  as well as making available to students co-curricular activities such as science camps, Massey University trips, field trips to parks, beach and bush locations.

The department is always looking for new learning experiences for NPBHS students.
