A Better Way

The Old Testament Prophet Jeremiah has a wonderful passage in the middle of his book talking about a new and better covenant with the people. This Covenant is what we call the New Testament and the prophesy in JEREMIAH Ch 31 v 31 - 34 foretells it.

• A new way is required because the old way was broken.
• Legalism was shown to be inadequate in having power over a sinful nature.
• God declares through Jeremiah that "I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts". This is New Covenant living.
• Jesus came to set us free from legalism, but v 34 of our passage also implies that man is now without excuse.

In the Old Testament there was lots of fear and punishment for the law of God had dire consequences when broken. We live in a different era now and Paul reinforces this in 2 CORINTHIANS 3 v 6 when he writes "he has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant - not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life".
