English

English is a wide ranging study of how language is used to communicate in a variety of life situations. The aim of the English programme is to engage all students in language and literature studies in enjoyable and challenging ways. We aim to produce young men who leave New Plymouth Boys’ High School confident that they can use and manipulate language, to meet their needs - whatever direction their lives take; be it a butcher, a baker, a candlestick maker, a lawyer, a miner, a website designer, a farmer, magician or Act politician.

And who better to learn from than William Shakespeare.

We aim to have our students:

“in stitches” in the classroom, while
using “household words” effectively, and
able to do things in “the twinkling of an eye” as well as
understanding “the long and the short of it”
able to be understood in “all corners of the world”
understanding how “discretion is the better part of valour”
knowing how to react “in a pickle”
showing awareness that “brevity is the soul of wit” but
writing essays that “beggar’d all description” and
able to “fight fire with fire” in a metaphorical sense
working to their “heart’s content”
and able to deal with any situation “come what come may”
