STAR / Gateway Programme
The Secondary Tertiary Alignment Resource (STAR)
STAR was established in 1996 following a Ministerial Reference Group's recommendation that secondary schools be granted additional funding from which they could provide programmes in non-national curriculum courses for their senior students. The programmes, in full or in part, need to lead to assessment towards credit against unit standards on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) or towards other tertiary qualifications in non-national curriculum courses.
STAR is available to all state or state-integrated secondary, composite, area, and special schools for students in years 11 to 15. It is not available to private schools. Foreign fee-paying students and adult students are not included in STAR funding calculations, but the fund can be used to meet individual student needs at all levels.
STAR's intention is to enable secondary schools to facilitate their students' smooth transition from schooling to further education or employment.
Specifically, its objectives are to enable schools to:
Facilitate transition to the workplace for students, particularly those intending to go straight into the workforce or those likely to leave school without any formal qualifications;
- Provide or purchase tertiary courses which will better meet students' needs, which will motivate them to achieve, and which will facilitate their smooth transition to further education, training or employment;
- Support students to explore career pathways and help them make informed decisions about their schooling and future work or study.

What is GATEWAY?
Gateway opens a new pathway from school to the world of work. It's a great opportunity to blend school study with workplace learning and experience. Units are assessed in the workplace, counting towards national qualifications.
Gateway helps build skills for employment, working in real workplaces on real tasks. It gives opportunities to try out potential careers and build links to Industry Training Organisations, Modern Apprenticeships and workplaces.
After an interview with Mr Watts and Mr Moore you will need to make the initial approach with the employer of your choice for your placement. From here, the employer will be contacted by the school and an interview arranged to sort out your individual learning plan for the year. You will have unit standards to do in the workplace and other theory units to do in the classroom. These will all be marked by a registered assessor and your results recorded by the school.
Who do I speak to to find out more about Gateway?
Mr Watts and Mr Moore are the Gateway teachers and Mrs Bonner and Mrs Smith can help you with queries also.
