TOPEC

A highlight of their year 10 year at NPBHS for many is a week spent doing a TOPEC camp. This unique facility situated at the Meeting of the Waters has been running outdoor adventure camps for the students of Taranaki since 1986. Subsidised by schools and community organisations, a week of activities costs only $180, (similar activities elsewhere would cost well over $350) so it is an opportunity not to be missed.

A typical week revolves around the river, the rock, ropes and bush experiences. Depending on weather and conditions students raft or kayak down local rivers, rock climb around the base of Paritutu or on the mountain, climb the ropes course, swing off bridges, and tramp and camp in the bush. Sometimes groups even go caving at Awakino and sleep in snow caves on the ski field.

There are 5 courses on offer in 2011, and students go out based on their Social Science classes. Everyone has the opportunity to go.

In a world where we are getting increasingly ‘soft’ it is fantastic that there is an opportunity for students to be challenged and to get out of their comfort zones a bit. The personal growth is an important part of their transition from boy to man.

Information will be provided to your son when his course is on but you can also contact Mr Hewlett at school (7585399)
