2008 Junior
Results
All of our Year 9 & 10
boarders achieved their Junior Diploma last year. This was a fantastic result
and clearly reflects the fact that these boys have embraced this new initiative
in a positive and committed manner.
Henry Boon, Thomas
Clark-Puia and Vincent Lamont in Year 9 and Darren Alexander and Jayden Poingdestre in Year 10
achieved a Junior Diploma with Excellence.
At Year 9 level 46%
achieved at merit and in Year 10 level 40% achieved at merit.
The challenge for all of
the boys this year to improve on these results.
These results highlight a number of opportunities the hostel provides:
Supervised prep.
Hostel masters who are teachers.
The postivie relationship between the school and hostel.
Easy and ready access to all of the school's facilities
including the Homework Study Centre.
Postive peer pressure.
Leadership
The prefects for 2009 are: Brendon Fischer (Head Boarder), Martin Hebler (Head of Carrington), Heiden Bedwell-Curtis (Head of Moyes), Mitch Tuck, Hamish Mellow, Daniel Macdonald, Richard Weir, Adam Black, Keni Baledrokadroka, Ben Steiner, Sam Adams, Cameron Bryant, Jamie Stones, Alipate Umu, Creedance Lingman, Kane Sharrock, Jarrod Bell, Peter Latour, Tom Sandford and Ryan Braggins.
The prefects have set a number of goals for 2009: the ‘givens’ (winning Niger Trophy, the Inter House competition and the Day Boys vs. Boarders rugby match), no bullying, promoting a loser relationship with the day school and maintaining basic courtesy.
The prefects have made an outstanding start to the year.
Boarders always play a significant role in the student leadership
of the school. Since 2000 the school's Head Boy has been a
boarder on 4 occasions. This year four boarders are School
Prefects.
Boys are given leadership opportunities through the Hostel
and School Councils.
Cultural
Boarders participate fully in music, public speaking, debating,
drama and Kapa haka. The level of participation varies according
to ability but all boarders are encouraged to participate
so their potential is fulfilled.
Sport
All boarders are expected to participate in a winter team sport; irrespective of ability.
They are also encouraged to participate in summer sport. The number of different sports boarders now
play is a reflection of the hostel's philosophy that 'busy boys are positive boys.'
In 2007 boarders excelled in our 1st Rugby XV, Cross Country & Athletics, 1st Basketball V, Squash & Tennis,
Volleyball and Touch Rugby teams.
The inter house competition is an important element of this school's culture. The boarding house, Hatherly, has won the competition
14 times since 1987.
Top Bloke Awards
These awards recognise boarders who have done something extraordinary.
Hostel Certificate
A new initiative in 2008. The purpose of the Hostel Certificate
is to reward boarders who demostrate the values we
expect in a boarder:
Self Management.
Endeavour & Persistence.
Participation.
Social Responsibility.
Respect for the Environment.
Pride in Appearance.
'Prep Work'.
