School Production

New Plymouth Boys’ High School and New Plymouth Girls’ High School have a combined school production from 31st May – 2nd June. This is an hilarious and touching story about a friendship that spans 30 years, two cultures and one street. The story is written by Oscar Kightley from Sione’s Wedding and Bro’ Town fame and Dave Armstrong.

It is set in 1970s suburban New Zealand, where six-year-old Ioane Tafioka, fresh off the boat from the islands, moves in next door to Peter Burton. Instantly becoming best friends, they spend every day together. As the boys become teenagers they succumb to their stereotypical paths, drifting apart, until a chance reunion twenty years later forces them to confront their ghost of years past.

The story makes us look inward at our own prejudices and celebrates the power of true friendship. Filled with kiwi hits that span the decades and even a touch of Bollywood, ‘Niu Sila’ tells an important tale about culture and diversity in modern New Zealand.
