There are a number of opportunities to represent the school at golf.
Every February, the school fields two four-man teams in Super 8 Golf. This is 54 holes of stroke-play held over two days. This year’s competition is in Rotorua.
In Term 2 of this year we play home inter-school fixtures against Auckland Grammar School and Hamilton Boys’ High School, and then early in Term 3 we travel away to play against Wellington College.
The Taranaki inter-secondary school competition will be played at Ngamotu in June with the winning school travelling to Palmerston North in September for the national finals.
The school golf championships are held during the final week of SCP in term 3 at Ngamotu.
The school golf group usually goes on a development trip somewhere through the central North Island during the last week of Term 4 (Year 9 camp week).
Golf runs as an SCP option from 2.00pm to 4.30pm every Thursday through Term two and most of Term three. Any person who is a member of a golf club with a full NZ handicap (or who is working towards one), and who is serious about improving their golf should see Mr Wilson to find out how to get involved. This programme will include physical and mental skill-coaching and conditioning sessions.
Introductory coaching sessions for beginners are held on Thursday afternoons after school at the New Plymouth Golf Club from 3.45 until 4.45pm. These are all free, run in conjunction with Taranaki Golf, and get under way at the beginning of March and continue throughout Term 1. The only criteria is that boys are keen to learn, and commit to a minimum of three sessions.
