Any boy who sails, or wants to sail is eleigible for the NPBHS sailing team. The first event is The Taranaki Secondary Schools Yachting Championships and each boy is able to enter either the Optimist, Starling or 420 classes. This event is an individual event with boys sailing their own boats in their respective classes. Further opportunities exist to travel to the Central North Island Championships in Taupo, and the Lower North Island Championships in Wellington as a school team with beginners and more experienced sailors. During these events a team is selected to train for the nationals and this event is sailed in 420’s and is classed as a Teams Sailing Event. We have a sail-off amongst Taranaki schools and the winners go to the nationals.
The Nationals is a Teams Racing Event and is sailed in 420’s. Each school has a team consisting of 6 sailors plus 1 or 2 reserves and a manager or coach. All team members need to be a member of a yacht club affiliated to Yachting NZ. They also need to be full time pupils (years 9-13) of the secondary school they represent, and be under 19 years of age as at 1 January 2018. All sailing crew members must meet the NZTSA requirements: The two main criteria are involvement in encouraging team sailing and ability to handle the boats used in the regatta safely..
