Why Host?

Hosting an international student is a wonderful way to bring the world into your home. It’s an opportunity to share your Kiwi lifestyle, create lifelong friendships, earn an additional income ($380 per week), and perhaps even start a global network for your own children’s future adventures. Being a homestay family is an incredibly rewarding experience.

At New Plymouth Boys’ High School:

  • The International Director meets with the student and their family in their home country to help determine the most suitable homestay match.
  • Our dedicated NZ Homestay Manager carefully matches students with families to ensure the best possible fit.
  • Ongoing support is available 24/7, so you’ll always have someone to turn to if you need advice or assistance.

If you’re interested in opening your home and providing a “home away from home” for one of our international students, we’d love to hear from you. Becoming a host family is straightforward:

  • Complete a short application form.
  • A family profile is created for student matching.
  • Safety checks are carried out (including Police Vetting for anyone over 18 in your household).
  • Our Homestay Manager will visit and meet with you in your home.

Join our supportive community of host families and play a vital role in the success of our international students here in New Plymouth.

Hosting a student allows you to share your culture, build friendships, and make a lasting impact on their journey.

What does a Host Family Need to Provide?

Host families provide a safe and welcoming environment, offering students the following comforts and support:

  • A fully furnished room
  • Internet access for study and leisure
  • 3 quality meals per day, 7 days a week
  • Laundry services

How are

Students Placed?

International students generally come to NZ for one of two reasons:

  • To experience a different culture and improve their English.

  • To gain a NZ education and qualification.

Students usually arrive in Year 12 or 13 and stay short-term (3–6 months). Students seeking a New Zealand education typically start in Year 11 and remain long-term until they complete their high school qualifications.

How are Host families Selected and Supported?

Host families at NPBHS are carefully selected for their ability to provide a welcoming and supportive home environment. The application process includes a home visit and background checks to ensure the best possible match between the student and the family.

Once a student is placed, host families receive ongoing support from our International Department, including regular check-ins and guidance to address any questions or concerns.
