The NPBHS sailing team is open to all boys interested in sailing. We participate in various events, starting with the Taranaki Secondary Schools Yachting Championships where boys can enter the Optimist, Starling, or 420 classes as individuals.

Opportunities exist to compete as a school team at the Central North Island Championships in Taupo and the Lower North Island Championships in Wellington. From there, a team is selected for the Nationals, a Teams Racing Event in 420s. To be eligible, sailors must be under 19, full-time pupils (Yrs 9-13) of the represented school, and members of a Yachting NZ-affiliated yacht club.

Meeting NZTSA requirements, including promoting team sailing and safe boat handling, is crucial. The winners of our Taranaki schools sail-off earn a spot at the Nationals.

Teacher in charge: Mr Craig Thomas

Competition and Teams: The first event is the Taranaki Secondary Schools Yachting Championships and each boy is able to enter either the Optimist, Starling or 420 classes. Those students selected for the sailing team get the opportunity to compete in a qualifying regatta in New Plymouth, and if they are successful, they will compete in the North Island and NZ Championships.

Training: Training times varies and will be confirmed closer to the season.

Uniform and Equipment: Students are expected to provide their own wet-weather gear. Some boats are available from the NP Yacht Club.

Cost: Subs vary from year to year, and there is a cost for trips away.
