Rugby holds a rich tradition at NPBHS as a winter sport, having produced numerous outstanding teams and players in the past.

The rugby season kicks off in late March, with team trials scheduled after the conclusion of summer sports. Teams participate in regular Saturday competitions and hold practice sessions twice a week, typically on Tuesdays and Thursdays during Sports and Cultural Practice (SCP).

Beyond the standard Saturday games, there are several inter-school fixtures. The 1st XV faces off against formidable opponents such as Hamilton Boys' High School, St. Pats Silverstream, Whanganui Collegiate, Palmerston North Boys' High School, Auckland Grammar School, and Francis Douglas Memorial College. Meanwhile, the 2nd XV takes on Whanganui Collegiate, and the U15 team competes against Auckland Grammar School, Hamilton Boys' High School, Palmerston Boys' High School, and Westlake Boys' High School.

An U15 side is formed at the beginning of the year, and they train together in preparation for a National tournament.
